Weekly Quiz: Is That Vegan?

Vegan-Quiz.jpg

As you probably know, in their effort to avoid using or consuming anything derived from an animal product, vegans face some pretty intense restrictions on what they can and can’t eat. Here’s a quick quiz to determine how well you know what is (and is not) an acceptable part of a vegan diet. We’ll name the ingredient, and you determine whether it’s vegan-friendly. Let’s start things off with a freebie:

1) Bacon

a) Completely unacceptable

d) Obviously rules don’t apply to bacon

2) Kidney Beans

a) Kidneys are an organ, therefore kidney beans are out of the question

b) Acceptable, in spite of a confusing name

3) Mayonnaise

a) Okay, as long as it’s not on a ham sandwich

b) Only if it’s of the egg-free vegan variety

4) Honey

a) Bees work way too hard to have someone steal the fruits of their labor

b) Bees work way too hard to let the fruits of their labor go to waste

5) Olive Oil and Vegetable Oil

a) No, some additives are still derived from animal products

b) Of course, it’s even in the name. Olives and vegetables are not animal products.

6) Marshmallows

a) Most marshmallows contain gelatin, and are therefore verboten

b) An innocuous substitute for the obviously forbidden ice cream

7) Twizzlers

a) Another gelatin filled no-no

b) A great (and delicious) Vegan-friendly movie snack

8) Froot Loops

a) An acceptable breakfast option

b) Shameless exploitation of a Toucan (and contains Casein)
