Scottish GPs have voted against a proposal for chocolate to be taxed in the same way as alcohol and cigarettes. The proposed tax increase was brought about in an effort to combat the growing obesity problem. Dr. David Walker, a food scientist and nutritionist stated:
“Chocolate has lost its status as a special treat and I think that if we charged a tax on it then, over a number of years, we could restore that status.”
He also went on to say that obesity was becoming a major concern and Scotland risked heading down the same path as the United States. However, looking at the most recent statistics it appears the US still has a 33% edge when it comes to obese population. So, if any Americans were worried about losing our lead, you can breathe a sigh of relief.
