However, there are a few substitutions in the spirit of  the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/eatthis.menshealth.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eat This Not That<\/a><\/em> generation that will get your more bang for your vegetable buck.<\/p>\n<p>In a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/health-news\/popular-fruit-and-vegetables-not-the-healthiest-1954854.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> study <\/a>presented at the 2010 Experimental Biology Conference, scientists found that vegetables common in the American diet aren&#8217;t necessarily ones with the most concentrated amount of nutrients. The specific focus of the study measured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/phytonutrients-faq#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phytonutrients<\/a>, which are all the &#8220;good&#8221; things in veggies that help keep us healthy (in a nutshell).<\/p>\n<p>See the vegetables go head-to-head after the jump.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the popular vegetables and their healthier counterparts:<\/p>\n<p>Carrots: Sweet potatoes, because they contain twice the beta-carotene.<br \/>\nOranges: Papaya, which contains 15 times the beta-cryptoxantin (whatever that is).<br \/>\nSpinach: Kale, with 3 times the lutein.<br \/>\nStrawberries: Raspberries, with 3 times the amount of ellagic acid.<br \/>\nMustard: Watercress contains an equal amount of isothiocyanate as four teaspoonfuls of mustard.
