Healthy Frozen Yogurt Popsicles

Healthy Frozen Yogurt Popsicles

There’s nothing like a cold, refreshing popsicle to cool you down on a hot summer’s day. However, store bought popsicles can be packed full of sugar, which isn’t always the best for you.

Homemade popsicles are easy to make, are healthy, and you can choose exactly what goes into them!

In this article, I will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make healthy frozen yogurt popsicles from the comfort of your own home.

It can sometimes be tricky to think of healthy snacks that are still exciting for the kids. These 3 ingredient blueberry yogurt swirl popsicles are the perfect snack that are so delicious they’ll never know how healthy they are!

The texture is smooth and creamy, with a delicious fresh tartness from the blueberries to cut through the fat. With only 3 ingredients involved, and only 10 minutes of preparation, they couldn’t be more simple to make!

You can make a ton of variations of these particular frozen yogurt popsicles. You could try different types of fruit for the puree, or change up the yogurt to suit your preferences. The best thing about this recipe is how versatile it is!

It’s a great recipe to get the whole family involved! Experiment and try different flavor combinations to find your favorite flavors. Provided that the ratios of the recipe are the same, this recipe is a great one to have in your back pocket. Add a little agave or honey, and then pop them in the freezer.

How to choose the right ingredients

  • Popsicle moldPopsicle molds are pretty inexpensive and easy to get hold of. I use these ones from Amazon and they are great quality and produce the same result every time! Once you’ve got a popsicle mold in your possession and realize the endless variations you can make that are much healthier, you won’t ever reach for the store bought variety again!
  • Yogurt – Flavored yogurt, such as vanilla, honey, or blueberry compliments this recipe really well. I tend to use vanilla Greek yogurt as it gives this recipe a delicious creaminess, but you can also use low-fat or nonfat yogurt if you would prefer. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Greek yogurt, either. Any yogurt that you have to hand will work.
  • Sweetener – These frozen yogurt popsicles work well with both agave and honey. However, it’s important to start small and work your way up as you can add sweetness but can’t take it away. In my experience, you don’t need much, just something to take the edge off the tartness of the berries and the tart Greek yogurt. However, if you’re using fruit that is much sweeter such as sweet cherries, you will need to reduce the sweetener accordingly.

A guide on how to make 3 ingredient blueberry yogurt swirl popsicles

Equipment you will need:

  • Popsicle molds
  • A blender (or food processor)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of blueberries
  • 2 cups of vanilla Greek yogurt (or any flavor of your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons of agave or honey

Instructions:

  • Step one: To begin this recipe, start off by adding 2 cups of blueberries in a blender or a food processor, blending until the mixture is a smooth consistency.
  • Step two: Next, you will need to pour the thick blueberry mixture into a bowl to sweeten it up a little bit. Squeeze in the agave or honey and stir until it is evenly distributed throughout the blueberry mixture.
  • Step three: Add the yogurt and very gently mix it with the blueberry mixture. If you want a marbled look to your popsicles, you will need to take care when adding the yogurt. Make sure that you do not fully blend the yogurt and blueberries together, as it will become a one lighter purple color. Instead, swirl the two together to create the marbled look.
  • Step four: Next, it’s time to taste the mixture to see if it’s sweet enough. If you want the mixture to be sweeter, now is the time to swirl more honey through the mixture. Note: More mixing might alter the color slightly.
  • Step five: Pour the mixture evenly into each popsicle mold. If your popsicle mold has slots for sticks, you can insert them before popping them into the freezer. If your molds don’t have these slots, then freeze the molds for 2 hours before placing a wooden popsicle stick in the middle. This will allow the popsicle molds to have set slightly before you add the sticks in, allowing them to stand up properly.
  • Step six: When you are ready to eat the popsicles, make sure that you run the popsicle molds under warm water so that you can remove them more easily. What you don’t want is the stick to come out without the popsicle on it, so this is an important step!
  • Step seven: Enjoy on a scorching hot day!

Notes on making frozen yogurt popsicles

  • Experiment with different fruits – Always be generous with the fruit in this recipe, and experiment with other types of fruit to make different variations of this popsicle! You can use approximately two cups of chopped strawberries, halved cherries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches, and pineapple if you want a tropical theme for your frozen yogurt popsicles!
  • Sweetener – The great thing about adding agave or honey is that it really makes the flavors of the tart fruit and Greek yogurt stand out. While sweetener is optional, these popsicles are still much healthier than shop-bought ones even with a little sweetener added.

If you’re using a sweeter fruit mentioned above such as chopped up strawberries, you can also reduce the amount of sweetener that you use in this recipe as the popsicle will be naturally sweeter anyway. Always start slowly, as you can add more sweetener but once it’s in the mixture, you can’t take it away. Make sure that you taste the mixture as you go, then add a little more sweetener if you think the popsicles need it.
