After hearing about the controversial Australian KFC ad in which a white cricket fan placates a crowd of black West Indian supporters by offering to share a bucket of fried chicken, the only thing more surprising than KFC thinking this wouldn’t be construed as racist is seeing how actually not racist the commercial is.
The fact that’s it’s 2010 and we still can’t get past the idea that fried chicken is delicious not just to black people, but to everyone, is absolutely mind-boggling. It’s a frickin’ crowd-pleaser, it’s a lot of food, and regardless of what team you’re rooting for, it’s perfect for watching a game.
In all honesty, the liberal “look how tolerant I am” side of me wanted to be outraged, but as soon as I saw the commercial, it seemed so decidedly unracist that I couldn’t help but shake my head. If you’re so hung up on stereotypes that you can’t watch a 2- second advertisement and separate a ridiculous (and entirely American) racial stereotype from a light-hearted Australian commercial, you’re probably living in a perpetual state of self-righteous outrage.
If you’re going to get offended by a fast food ad, you should really be up in arms over Taco Bell trying to feed you a line of bullshit about how their Fresco menu is a legitimate diet option. Unlike the KFC ad, that type of insult to the intelligence of all Americans is far more damaging than a commercial airing several thousands of miles away.
